What Is BigSpy?
BigSpy is an ad intelligence / “ad-spy” tool that helps marketers, advertisers, and e-commerce professionals see what ads their competitors are running.
According to its FAQ, it supports 9 platforms (including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest, AdMob, Yahoo, Unity) and covers more
than 70 countries. It’s designed to help with creative inspiration, campaign research, and competitive ad strategy.
Pros / Strengths
1. Large Ad Database
- BigSpy’s database is huge: over a billion ad creatives, per some sources.
- This breadth means you can often find ads for many niches, industries, and geographies.
2. Multi-Platform Coverage
- Because it supports many platforms, you’re not just limited to Facebook or Instagram — you can research across YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, etc.
- That makes it more versatile than tools that only spy one network.
3. Powerful Filtering
- Users praise its ability to filter ads by many dimensions: country, industry, ad type, time, creative format, CTA, etc.
- This helps narrow down to exactly the kind of ad creative or regional campaign you want to study.
4. User Interface & Ease of Use
- Several reviewers say the UI is intuitive and clear, even for beginners.
- The design helps with navigating through large volumes of data.
5. Monitoring and Trend Insights
- You can track the performance and trends of ads: monitor which creatives are hot, understand what your competitors are doing, and get inspiration.
- There’s also functionality to “track” ads over time, which is valuable for competitive intelligence.
6. Pricing Structure
- They offer a free plan, which gives limited but usable functionality (5 daily queries + some ad saves) for Facebook.
- The Pro plan (more powerful) offers a 3-day trial for $1.
- For teams, there’s a Group plan, and for large businesses a VIP/Enterprise plan.
7. Good Reputation on Review Platforms
- On G2, BigSpy has a 4.6/5 rating from ~600 reviews.
- On GetApp, users rate it highly for value, features, and ease of use.
- On Capterra, reviewers highlight its straightforwardness and powerful data.
Cons / Weaknesses
1. Pricing Jump
- here’s a big gap between the Basic plan and the Pro plan: some sources argue there’s no “middle ground.”
- For small businesses or solo marketers, the jump to Pro (to unlock more platforms or features) may feel expensive.
2. Free Plan Limitations
- The free plan is quite restricted. According to the FAQ, you only get 5 daily queries and can save 20 ads per day on Facebook.
- For serious research, you likely need to upgrade.
3. Performance / Loading Issues
- Some users report that the tool can be slow when handling large or complex searches.
- Especially with many filters or when accessing video creatives, load times may lag.
4. Data Gaps or Hidden Data
- According to some G2 reviews, not all data is available — for example, Page ID or full caption text is sometimes hidden.
- This could limit the depth of competitor analysis for some users.
5. Refund / Billing Complaints
- There are user-reported complaints (from Reddit) about being charged $99 instead of the advertised $1 trial if they don’t cancel properly
- This suggests users need to be careful when subscribing and check the billing terms.
6. Data Accuracy / Relevance
- A few users argue that some of the data is outdated or less relevant
- There are also critiques that high “popularity” doesn’t always equate to actual ad performance
7. Limited Support for Some Regions
- Some users say BigSpy doesn’t cover certain regions well, which could limit usefulness if you're targeting smaller or niche markets.
- Also, according to reviews, refund policy might not be very generous: Capterra mention “does not support refunds.”
Who Is BigSpy Good For?
- E-commerce Marketers / Dropshippers: Great for finding winning ad creatives, spotting trending products, and evaluating how competitors are advertising.
- Digital Marketers & Agencies: Useful for campaign research, creative inspiration, and monitoring what others are doing across multiple platforms.
- Startups / Small Teams: The free or lower-tier plans can help them get started with competitive intelligence without too heavy an investment — though they may hit the limits pretty fast.
- Larger Brands or Enterprises: For deeper insights, trend tracking, and cross-platform ad intelligence, BigSpy’s Pro or Group plan is likely more valuable.
My Verdict
Overall, BigSpy is a very solid ad intelligence tool, especially considering its coverage (many platforms, many countries) and the size of its ad database.
Its filtering capabilities and trend tracking make it quite powerful for competitor research and creative inspiration.
However, it's not perfect. The restrictive free tier, the sometimes steep jump to Pro, and occasional performance or billing issues mean it's not a “no-risk” tool.
If you're serious about using it, plan to test it during the trial, be very careful when upgrading, and assess whether the data you get is valuable
enough to justify the cost.
Rating (my assessment): ~ 4 out of 5 — great for many use cases, but not ideal for everyone.
